WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - “I started out my clean food journey for 30 days. I was talking to my sister and she said you’ll feel so much better,” said Dana Milford.
Dana Milford changed her eating habits a little more than five years ago.
She also changed careers. Milford tossed retirement from mortgage banking aside and started her second career.
“Praying, praying, praying, and Christmas of 2014 God said, cook. Cook for a living. I never worked in a restaurant,” said Milford.
But she was no chicken in the kitchen. Dana knew she was filling a niche and a need in this area for fresh, local and organic when possible.
“My initial thing was keeping families out of drive-through windows.”
Her menu is also predominantly gluten and dairy free.
“I went from, 'What am I going to serve for lunch today?' to planning our weekly menus in advance. And we still only plan our menus a week in advance cause we’re very seasonal with our produce. It’s what can I get from the farms.”
“We come here pretty much every day,” said Cassie Remington.
Cassie Remington of West Monroe comes to For His Temple for several reasons.
“I love that they use all fresh and local ingredients and we love them. So that’s one of our favorite things about coming in.”
“This is a ginormous pot of organic black beans with Mahaffey farm ham hock.”
Besides black beans, she’s also serving chicken fritters, roasted beets, and eggplant casserole today.
“I’ve never tried the chicken fritter. That’s really tasty, you can taste the dill. She says it’s a dairy-free cheese and I’m a cheese freak,” said Tammi Arender.
But Milford says it’s her chicken pot pie people go crazy over as well as her tamale lasagna and take-home meals. But what really soothes her soul is the connection to her customers.
“My customers are just a big deal to me.”
"For His Temple Family Foods" is open five days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Milford also prepares take-home meals and sells selected gluten-free and clean eating products.
