MER ROUGE, La. - (KNOE) Eugene Harper of Monticello Arkansas discovered Country Cream on his travels through northeast Louisiana about ten years ago. He never misses a chance to drop in for a bite.
Neither does Aaliyah Green of Bastrop.
“I really was just craving some ice cream.”
Her mom would bring her to this little landmark in Mer Rouge when she was a little girl, after a doctor’s appointment.
“It was like our little healing after our little boo-boo shot. It was always our favorite,” said Green.
The golden vanilla is the recipe of Howell Ford. He and his wife opened Country Cream in 1976.
“It’s my recipe and no one else has it and a lot of people want it and I 've had a lot of people want it and try to buy it or whatever through the years. I’ve had people all over the United States could and carry it back. I just never would,” said Howell Ford.
This is the most luscious ice cream I’ve ever had.
And it’s not just the frozen treats that have locals licking their lips. The chili for the chili dogs and Frito pies is homemade as well.
“I’ve never advertised in the years I’ve been here. It’s strictly word of mouth since the beginning. It seems to have worked. People, once they try it, they fall in love with it,” said Ford.
Country Cream is open 7 days week. Ford says Sundays during warm weather can be one of his busiest days.
Country Cream is located at the intersection Highways 138 and 2 in Mer Rouge. For more culinary destinations, check out www.louisianatravel.com/culinary.
