Tom Pearson is the Chief Meteorologist for KNOE and KAQY.
Tom has been the chief meteorologist at KNOE since 2008 and was the chief meteorologist at another local station in Monroe/West Monroe for almost 15 years prior to his employment at KNOE. Before arriving in Monroe in October 1993, Tom worked for a CBS station in Amarillo, Texas for a little more than two years. Tom has now been in the television broadcast industry doing weathercasts for over 25 years. Prior to his time on television, he worked for a little while in Public Radio while he was a student at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. Tom also worked for a while at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Norman, OK as a voice on the NOAA Weather Radio for the western half of Oklahoma.
Tom was born in northern Illinois, where he still remembers snowy and sometimes icy winters. He has also spent a few years living in Dallas but spent about two decades in Oklahoma. It was here that, at the age of 14, Tom decided to become a meteorologist after a tornado hit his house while he and his family were at home in Tulsa. Considerable damage occurred to his house and many homes in his neighborhood, but fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities. It was also in Oklahoma (and especially in Amarillo), that Tom witnessed extremely varied weather events like blizzards, ice storms, flash floods, severe thunderstorms with baseball-sized hail and wind gusts of 100 mph, dust storms, extreme heat, and excessive cold. Many of these weather extremes occurring within hours of one another or even simultaneously!
Over the years, Tom has been presented with a number of awards from the Associated Press for his weathercasts. He has also earned his television seals of approval from the National Weather Association and from the American Meteorological Society. Tom has a passion for weather and a very healthy respect for the power and sometimes hazards posed by weather at times. He tries very hard for accuracy with each and every forecast, but admits that it’s a challenging task at times when you attempt to forecast weather conditions for some point in the future when those weather conditions are constantly changing in three dimensions!
In his free time, Tom enjoys almost anything that takes him outside...boating, swimming, bicycle riding, etc. Most of these activities are shared with his family...his wife and young teenage daughter. Tom and his family love to vacation at the beach in Florida, but their favorite vacation spots are the beaches and rainforests in Costa Rica! He also spends many hours every week working towards completely refurbishing the railroad tracks at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo. You can see Tom’s weathercast’s on KNOE, weekday evenings at 5, 6 and 10 o'clock and on KAQY at 5:30 pm and 10 pm.
