Grandparents Raising Grandchildren seminars kick off March 9
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Nationwide, Louisiana has the third highest amount of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, according to GRIC. Nanette Flowers first noticed the issue at her church, First Methodist of Monroe, and decided to fill in the gap.
Six weekly sessions of “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” begin Wednesday, March 9th and last from 6 until 7 p.m. room #16 of the church. These sessions continue through April 13th. You do not have to attend all of them, but each one is sure to be packed with useful information to help navigate the “kinship guardianship” relationship more and more grandparents are facing in the state and across the country.
Executive director of GRGIC (Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Information Center) in Baton Rouge and ULM gerontology professor Dr. Anita Sharma will lead these classes. Food and childcare will also be provided.
Contact First Methodist of Monroe, located at 3900 Loop Rd, Monroe, LA 71201, at (318) 325-7335. The sessions are free. There will be door prizes and freebies on the first night, March 9th!
