BASTROP, La. (KNOE) -

Update: The location has since closed.

Bastrop has a new restaurant that knows soul food, Southern Soul Food Kitchen.

Opened by Katrina Pates and her sister, it started with a call to Pates from the Magnolia Shopping Center manager.

“I’m trying to open up that place that used to be Nick’s. I want somebody that I know that can cook and everything, he said. Do you want to go in with me? No, I’m trying to open up my little burger place,” said Pates.

She realized this was a good deal, and she decided to open on Nov. 1, 2021. And customers are already hooked when they taste the food. “This is my second plate,” said Robert Leach, a first-time customer, and he plans to return.

The buffet has everything including fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, yams, corn, rolls, and fresh salad.

There should be no excuse to leave hungry. The chicken has great flavor along with the rest of the selections. This is all because of how Pates was raised.

“My great grandmother raised me. You had to cook; you had to learn. I was the only girl in the house with her. The boys had to do the outside. You had to know what to do on the inside. She made the best peach cobbler, but she made it out of toast. A lot of people want the peach cobbler, you know; they want the chicken and the fish. People come in and say y’all got the best chicken in town,” said Pates.

Even Mayor Betty Alford-Olive agrees that this place is focused on the customer. When coming in, the feel of the place is open and inviting.

“I’m welcome that my business is appreciated. And I know that every customer that walks through their door feels the same thing,” said Alford-Olive.

Pates wants everyone to be in a good mood when they eat here.

“Even when they’re feeling bad. I want to be there to make sure that they are feeling good once they are in here. You know, they might when they go back out, you know, I have no control over that. But while they are in here, I want to see a smile on their face, and with them eating,” said Pates.

Grab a plate, fill it up, because the Southern Soul Food buffet in Bastrop will feed your soul.
