Mother of 1-year-old found dead in vehicle charged with negligent homicide
Cause not been determined; police investigating it is possibly heat-related
SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) — The Shreveport Police Department says that the mother of a 1-year-old that was found dead in the back seat of a vehicle was arrested and charged.
The one-year-old child, Joseph Everett, was left in the parked vehicle for several hours before he was found shortly after 3 p.m on Thursday, Oct. 7 in a mobile home park in the 6200 block of West Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, authorities say.
His mother, Meagan Everett, 30, faces a charge of negligent homicide. She was taken into custody.
The cause of the child’s death has not been determined and likely will not be known until an autopsy is conducted.
Police are investigating whether it possibly is heat-related, a spokeswoman said.
Detectives with the Shreveport Police Department Violent Crimes and Crime Scene Units responded to the scene and launched their investigations. CSIU photographed the scene and collected evidence and detectives interviewed witnesses and the mother of the child. Detectives worked through the day and night and learned that the child had been left unattended inside of the vehicle since mid-morning. The vehicle was off, and the windows were up and the child ultimately succumbed to the heat.
Authorities are interviewing the people who were caring for the child at the time. It’s not immediately known whether they are family members.
Meagan Everett’s bond is set at $15,000.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
