Louisiana Tech unveils “Get Your Shot to Win Big” student vaccine incentive program
RUSTON, La. (KNOE) - Louisiana Tech University unveiled an incentive program encouraging students to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Get Your Shot To Win Big” is Louisiana Tech’s new program to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Students who have received at least one dose of the vaccine can enter a series of drawings to win prizes.
“We think this rollout of this incentive program, incentivizing our students to get vaccinated will accomplish both being able to help them be vaccinated, come back to the campus and be able to gather again together in face to face classes and organizations. We think that’s going to be what’s best for everyone,” Dickie Crawford said.
Crawford, who is the Associate Vice President for Student Advancement, says they’re prioritizing the physical and mental health of faculty, staff, and students.
The prizes up for grabs include paid tuition and fees, a meal plan for one quarter, apple products, or credit for textbooks.
“I was excited about it. I’m all for the vaccine. And I think that engaging the student body in this way is just, you know, it’s a crucial way to get people to take that step. This incentive program adds a little excitement to it. It adds a buzz to it,” Kelly Cole said.
LA Tech senior Kelly Cole believes the program could change the mindset of students who are unvaccinated.
Other universities, like ULM and Grambling State, are looking into implementing similar programs.
“We want our students and faculty staff to make informed decisions for themselves, what’s best for them. So we just encourage them to get educated, truly educated about it, and make those informed decisions. And I think when they do it, they’ll see that the majority of people right now that are getting sick, and going into the hospital, or unvaccinated,” Crawford said.
The university says more than 1,000 students have already entered the drawings, which begin on August 23rd.
