OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE) - Companies in Ouachita Parish have been looking for workers. Workers have been in short supply in the COVID-19 pandemic, but that could soon change. With COVID-19 restrictions relaxing, many companies are offering incentives and bonuses to start working. Many people hesitate to start due to government funding that is being given out during the pandemic. But experts say that people who are not looking could be in a situation that they are going to lose out on the benefits.

“If you’re not working now, and you’re able to work, I would say there’s plenty of jobs out there. And I would say that you need to go get a job as quickly as you can,” said Roy Heatherly, CEO of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce. “The additional monies that are available, the extra unemployment benefits are going to be ending soon, and you’ll start to see more competition in the workplace.”

Heatherly believes there will not be the same opportunities available in the future once the funding runs out for these employers. Not only will they miss out on bonuses, but he believes pay rates will readjust for the future as well and might not be paid as much as if you were to start now.

Councilwoman Juanita Woods also has some advice to employers as well that are seeking employees.

“If you are trying to pay someone minimum wage to have someone try and come back to work, it is not working right now,” Woods said.

Woods said if you are waiting until your benefits run out, that might not be the best option to get the most out of your work.
