MedCamps of Louisiana offering family camps this summer
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - This summer, MedCamps of Louisiana created a new program for the whole family. It’s called family camp.
Children who have chronic illnesses and disabilities and their families are able to experience a weekend together at Camp Alabama for summer camp.
I think what we found is like most families are looking for a place to take their child with special needs, that they can all participate together equally in everything that they do. And we have such a culture of acceptance out here and openness, that it’s just, you’re able to be yourself your authentic self while at camp,” Medcamps of Louisiana Executive Director Caleb Seney said.
Executive Director MedCamps Caleb Seney says families participate in all the summer camp activities their children normally do.
Tonya Hawkins’ daughter, Natalie, has attended MedCamps for 10 years.
She absolutely loves it. She looks forward to it all year. Her top two weeks are Christmas and Med Camps. That’s what she looks forward to all year,” Tonya Hawkins said.
Natalie’s favorite things to do at camp are archery, paintball and ziplining.
Hawkins says MedCamps is a week of decompression for them because they know Natalie is cared for.
“For us, it’s just really, really special. We just love it and to be able to be here and experience all the things she gets to do all week and participate ourselves. It just shows us how much and how important it is,” Hawkins said.
Seney says MedCams is looking forward to expanding this program and continuing it outside of the summer months.
“It’s been rewarding on our end as an organization to see families adopt this program and love it and want to come back already, but it’s also been rewarding for the families who have participated to just have a slow paced, easy getaway for their family to come and enjoy summer camp experience together and bond,” Seney said.
