MONROE, La. (KNOE) -The Monroe Police regretfully announces the passing of Chief Joe Stewart. He died on Thursday, June 24th. Chief Stewart was hired at the Department on November 1, 1974, and retired June 16, 2003. He was appointed to Chief on September 1, 1992, and served as such until his retirement.

During his tenure, Chief Stewart was instrumental in keeping the department up to date on the latest technology and lead what was considered by many, the premier police agency in Northeast Louisiana.

Chief Stewart was the true definition of a leader and held a command presence in every room he entered. Chief Stewart will be missed by all and always remembered in the halls of the Department and throughout the City of Monroe.
