Shooting in Monroe claims the life of 18-year-old

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Authorities are investigating a shooting that claimed the life of an 18-year-old. The incident happened on June 18, 2021, at around 9 p.m.

According to the Monroe Police Department, they were called to the 5100 block of Wilton Drive where they found 18-year-old Michael Sherman suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.

MPD says Sherman was taken to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. Police say the incident started with an argument between two females. They say the argument ended with one person being hit in the head with a metal bat and Sherman being shot.

Police say Dennis Benton of Monroe was arrested for aggravated second-degree battery after being accused of hitting one of the female victims in the head with a metal bat.

The investigation is ongoing.
