Monroe Transit has a new payment app coming soon
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Monroe Transit is launching a new way to hop on board with new payment options for the community. The options include a new app or a card that’s reloadable at any time. Officials say these options will provide a safer ride during the pandemic.
“I think it’s something that’s really keeping up with the technology,” Marc Keenan, the Director at Monroe Transit said.
The new app is called Mobile Transit Solutions Payment. Keenan, says the Monroe bus service saw a 60 percent drop in riders during the pandemic. So they are encouraging the community to ride again with the new options that offer safety with contactless payments.
“It’s because of COVID, the fare boxes are too close to the drivers, and sometimes the drivers have to help people put money in the machine. So we decided to find another solution that will help the drivers to social distance from the passenger,” Keenan said.
Modeshift is also providing new technology to make it easier for passengers. Officials say rural areas can pay without internet service.
“So this can work offline as well, when the device is offline and there’s no internet connection, we can still validate tickets so we don’t break the experience of the riders. All the information is stored securely on the device. The moment the bus gets connected everything goes to the cloud. Then sent to the Transit company,” Konstantin Spasov, Modeshift Manager said.
The city will also offer a reloadable card that riders can purchase at any terminal that also provides a contact-free ride. Keenan says federal COVID money paid for the changes which cost $36,000.
“Well, we have the CARES ACT that we received last year and it was about $4.7M. So with part of the CARES ACT, we were about to purchase that,” Keenan said.
Officials say if there are no bumps in the road and the testing goes well, the new cards and app should take effect by the end of May or early June 2021.
