RUSTON, La. (KNOE) - College students are experiencing food insecurity across the country. According to Feeding America, 47% of all college students reported being food-deprived.

The insecurity is affecting many students in Northeast Louisiana. Louisiana Tech is expanding its services to its students. The mission is to provide students who are experiencing food insecurity with healthy options.

“We know nutrition is a part of being able to lead a healthy lifestyle and so it’s vital to students’ success. Research shows that when students are well-nourished, they’re able to focus better, and therefore they’re able to perform better on exams,” Catherine Fontenot, the Founder of the Good Nutrition Mission Food Pantry, said.

The Good Nutrition Mission Food Pantry at Louisiana Tech has grown since the pandemic.

“We’ve serviced anywhere from 200 to 300 students, since the pandemic, prior to that, we were probably only servicing about 50 to 80 students. so it’s grown substantially,” Fontenot, said.

Officials added an online ordering system to make it easier for students to get groceries and toiletry. Emma Bouley is a student at Tech, she says she’s grateful for the much-needed help.

“So I just really think it’s great that they’ve also started including toiletries and stuff like that, because I know that’s one of the reasons I’ve recommended my friends to come here. If they’re in need of a toothbrush or toothpaste, and it’s just like something they can’t afford for that month they can come here,” she said.

Officials say students must have a Louisiana Tech University student I.D., phone number, and email address to receive items. A student volunteer, Kara Hodge says, it’s a great feeling to serve others.

“This morning, I was in here, getting some things put together, and a guy came in with his three-year-old son. It was very fulfilling to see that, it’s not just students we’re helping, but these students have families,” she said.
