BASTROP, La. (KNOE) - Bastrop is getting a new state-of-the-art medical facility. It’ll consolidate three existing health centers to offer a one-stop-shop for health care.

The CEO of CommuniHealth Services says they’ve outgrown their current space, and it’s time for expansion.

According to the Primary Care Development Corporation, Morehouse Parish has less access to primary care and behavioral health services compared to state and national levels.

Katie Parnell, CEO of CommuniHealth Services, says this new facility will address that gap.

“Sometimes it’s really hard for low-income patients in rural communities to get to larger cities, and so we want to provide care for them here at home,” Parnell said. “High-quality care that’s affordable that’s easy for them to access. We know that patients have better outcomes when they can get care local in their communities that they live in.”

The facility will consolidate the Bastrop Family Practice and Behavioral Health Center, Bastrop Pediatric Clinic and the Administrative Offices.

It will cost just under $15 million and offer a variety of health services, located in the 300 block of N. Franklin Street.

“This was a groundbreaking ceremony for a 41,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility that will combine medical, dental, behavioral health, lab, pharmacy, x-ray and a host of enabling services all under one roof. So it would be a one-stop-shop for patients to be able to access care,” Parnell said.

It also includes a community space that can be converted to a 25-bed shelter for emergencies.

Kay King, CEO of the Morehouse Economic Development Corporation, says she’s excited to see it coming together.

“We know that to build a good workforce and to be competitive in the workforce... that workforce has to be healthy,” King said. “And that’s the mission and the goal of this organization is to make sure people have access to good medical care that they can afford.”

The new clinic will also bring new jobs to the area.

“When we move into the new facility, we expect that we’ll probably add around 33 new jobs for Morehouse Parish,” Parnell said.

The new medical center hopes to start seeing patients by next August.
