RAYVILLE, La. (KNOE) - Richland Parish students who need help with their homework is only one phone call away.

It’s called the Homework Hotline. The new and free resource was launched Jan. 25, and is open for all K-12 students who need help with an assignment during after school hours.

“This idea just came about organically. It was just an idea and we decided to check into it to see how it would work out,” Aleasha Waller, Richland Parish School Board Family Engagement Coordinator said.

This is how the hotline works. You dial the number 318-417-7335, you tell the operator the student’s name, school, grade level and specific assignment. From there the student will be set up with a teacher via Zoom.

“This is a way to help the parents help their students,” Ashleigh Frazier-May said.

Ashleigh Frazier-May is a 2nd Grade teacher at Rayville Elementary and is also one of the hotline volunteers. She said this should ease some of the stress that comes with virtual learning.

“I can’t tell you how many times parents have texted me saying, ‘please, please send me a text, email, video, or something and help me out.’ So this is a great resource that’s open to the entire parish and I think it’s amazing,” Frazier-May said.

Frazier-May said this new age of learning has forced them to get creative when it comes to teaching their kids. She said this tool is a prime example of how they will do whatever it takes to make sure the students in this parish succeed.

“There’s so much ground that we need to cover, but we can’t hang our heads and cry. We have to come up with solutions and tools to help our babies because at the end of the day, pandemic or not, my kids still have to learn. I’m still teaching future leaders and I have to make sure they get everything they can so they can become the leaders I know they’re going to be,” Frazier-May said.

The hotline is open Monday through Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
