MONROE, La. (KNOE) -A community is demanding answers after a 13-year-old girl was shot and killed at her home. Now, the victim’s family is speaking out.

Stanmiyana “Yaya” Cobb’s family, still reeling from their loss, say they are overwhelmed with sadness. However, they are doing their best to stay strong and honor Yaya’s memory.

“I’m sad and I’m in pain but I’m still strong,” her sister Stanteyunna Cobb said tearfully.

The Cobb family still can’t believe Yaya was the most recent victim of violence in Monroe.

Cobb was fatally shot Friday, Jan. 22 around 9:30 pm inside her home on South 6th Street.

Cobb’s sister Stanteyunna was inside the home when the unthinkable happened.

“I was sitting by the window and I heard some gunshots so I went into my mama room and by the time I was going to the door she was coming out my sister was going to the bathroom telling my mama she got heard and she was falling on the floor.”

Cobb was shot in her stomach while she was in her bathroom doing her hair, preparing for a fun night out.

“I was kind of scared and I was crying and I was like telling her to stand up because she kept on passing out and coming back up and closing her eyes,” said Stanteyunna.

Beatrice Strong, a neighbor, describes what that horrifying night was like.

“Boom, boom, boom, boom. And I heard about four or five shots back to back. That’s all I know. Then later I heard all this commotion with the police and the fire department,” recalled Strong.

Strong and other neighbors said they still can’t believe something like this happened on their street.

“We’ve never had any problems with anybody over here. Nothing going on like this has happened before,” said Strong.

Now, all Cobb’s sister has are memories.

“I love her and thank her for everything she’s done for me.”

Police are still investigating the shooting and are asking for the public’s help.
