MONROE, La. (KNOE) -The Ouachita Parish School Board held a meeting on Tuesday, there were many agenda items; one being the extension of COVID-19 leave for school faculty.

After the meeting, KNOE spoke with Dr. Don Coker one on one about his own battle with COVID- 19, as well as other COVID-19 related agenda items.

One of the agenda items was to approve the extension of paid time off hours for employees that have already used their PTO for something COVID-19 or quarantine related.

“We asked our school board to add an additional 5 days for any employee that may have used their 10 days already that may contract or have to quarantine because of a school-related incident already, and then there would be an additional 5 days out there for those employees.”

Superintendent Coker said after his own battle with the coronavirus, he has one message for the public, masks up!

“I did contract it about two weeks ago, and it has sometimes been challenging, but I’ve been very blessed in the fact that I’m back to work and I feel good. I’m not running any type of symptoms or anything like that. "

Coker also addressed how the virus changed his view on the pandemic and shared his message to the community.

“That’s the reason I’m wearing a mask usually, when I’m talking to an audience, I’m taking my mask off, but I will tell you masking up is big... Social distancing is big, and so we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, a lot of work to do, and I’m feeling really good right now. "

The next school board meeting is Tuesday, February 9th.
