Arkansas doctor forgives $650,000 in debt for 200 former patients
(KGO) - A recently retired oncologist in Arkansas forgave the medical debt of his former patients to help them through the pandemic.
Dr. Omar T. Atiq, M.D. said he was worried about how COVID-19 would impact his patients and wanted to do something to help.
“For them to worry about anything else other than getting back to health, is... it’s just not fair,” Atiq said.
He sent them a holiday card that said, “The clinic has decided to forgo all balances owed to the clinic by its patients.”
In all, he forgave $650,000 in medical debt for 200 patients.
“There’s no higher honor than to serve as a physician. And if I have been blessed to be able to help a little, then I’m glad for it,” Atiq said.
Atiq has been a physician for 30 years.
