Louisiana reshuffles federal virus aid to avoid losing it
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana lawmakers have reshuffled $16 million in federal coronavirus aid to unemployment payments and mobile devices for schoolchildren.
The money comes from $1.8 billion in direct coronavirus aid that Louisiana received from Congress. The actions of the joint House and Senate budget committee Friday were part of a rush to spend all the dollars before an end-of-year congressional deadline. The aid must be used by this month or the state loses it.
One half of the $16 million will go into Louisiana’s nearly bankrupt unemployment trust fund to pay jobless claims. The other half will be steered to the education department for technology including computers and tablets for distance learning.
