MONROE, La. (KNOE) -Tragedy has hit home hard for one Quitman woman who lost her home to a fire. In the same week learned she had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. “My medicines burnt up in the house,” Lora Jackson mentioned when describing the fiery event.

Engulfed in flames, that’s how Lora Jackson found her home on Tuesday evening when she returned to her home from the grocery store with her mother.

“When I got back, my house was on fire, everything all my medicine all my things were in there at the time of the fire. It was a total loss,” Jackson said, tearing up in front of the remnants of her home.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical issue. It started at the front of the house and ate its way through most of the home.

Jackson lived at the home with her daughter and her granddaughter. Before it burnt down, she had called the Jackson parish home for over 20 years.

Luckily no one was home at the time, but the weight of the pain was still heavy.

Jackson said, “I broke down, you know, I broke down into tears and just said lord why? I’m going through all the stage 3 cancer, and now my house is done burnt down. Now I’m like, what am I gonna do you know?”

The hardships didn’t stop there. The very next day, Jackson had to have surgery to prepare her for chemotherapy.

“I’ve got to take my first round of chemo. I take my first round of chemo. I’ve gotta take that for 6 months, and on top of this, I’m homeless.” Lora Jackson added.

In addition to her family’s support, the community has been a steadfast pillar of hope for her through everything, Jackson says.

“And I thank that Saint Rich community for everything they’ve done.. they’ve been coming through for me, and I love them. I love the St. Rich community.”
