Monroe holds annual Thanksgiving Turkey giveaway
MONROE, La. (KNOE) -A Monroe tradition was gobbled up on Friday as the city continues to further tradition. Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis hosted this year’s 17th annual turkey giveaway alongside members of the Monroe Fire and Police Departments.
1st responders and government officials helped give out 200 turkeys today to citywide organizations.
All of the turkeys were donated to the city by Walmart. Walmart workers were also in attendance to lend a hand in the giveaway.
Representatives from soup kitchens, senior citizen centers, local churches as well as the Monroe housing authority, came out to collect their birds.
The event was held outside the Monroe Convention Center where cars lined up to receive a turkey with less than a week to go before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis says it’s important to help each other during these hard times.
“with covid-19 and the shadow of a traditional holiday celebration, our greatest hope is that these birds will help bring hope to the tables that they land on for your families.. please make sure we celebrate safely. Let’s do what we can do to keep our loved ones safe as well.”
The city has donated more than 34 hundred turkeys over the past 17 years.
