2 members of NELA law enforcement died of COVID-19 contracted on duty

MONROE, La. (KNOE) -Two members of law enforcement officers in Northeast Louisiana have recently died from COVID-19 they contracted in the line of duty. That’s according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

According to the site, Lieutenant Loyd Ray Hamm died on Nov. 2 and Captain Randy Vallot died on Sept. 23. Both were with the Richland Parish Sheriff’s Office.

In Louisiana, 11 law enforcement officers have died as the result of a COVID-19 exposure while on duty. Nationally, 144 have died due to COVID-19 contracted in the line of duty.

The site has recorded 253 deaths in the line of duty in 2020. COVID-19 accounts for almost 60% of the line of duty deaths this year, according to the site. Many of those deaths were among correctional officers.
