New garbage pick-up service offered in Morehouse Parish
BASTROP, La. (KNOE) - Mounds of piled-up garbage is a common eye-sore in Morehouse Parish, but officials say they have found a solution. For the last 10-months, residents say they sometimes go three to four weeks without getting their garbage picked up.
Terry Matthews, Morehouse Parish Police Jury President, said they had been experiencing issues due to manpower and equipment.
“We do have old trucks that we’re trying to keep running,” Matthews said. “We are having problems with employees trying to keep employees.”
The Police Jury recently entered a contract with Waste Management to help with the trash service. Matthews says this means that residents will pay $7 a month to have their garbage picked up once a week.
“What we have to realize is that waste management is a large organization. It’s a large company that deals with this every day,” Matthews said. “So, if your pickup is on Monday, guess what Waste Management will be there on Monday, rain, shine, sleet or snow.”
It has residents like Kimberly Watson excited.
“You don’t have to worry about trash being on the side of your road for four weeks. You don’t have to worry about the smell,” Watson said.
Watson said that right now it has been more than three weeks since her trash was picked up. It is something she has been fighting since the beginning.
“So, $7 is not bad. I am excited about this. And I have already paid in advance,” Watson said.
Matthews said the fastest way to sign up is online at wm.com, select “Residential Waste Pickup” and enter your physical address. Or you can call (800) 284-2451. The new trash service will begin January 1, 2021.
