MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Monroe mayor Friday Ellis is not pursuing plans for a new arena and event center in Monroe which were in the works by the previous administration.

City officials confirmed that they will recommend performing a study to see what updates should be made to the Civic Center.

Former mayor Jamie Mayo had originally been planning to have a new state of the art arena for the city. Mayo’s plans were for it to replace the existing Civic Center.

One Monroe resident says he believes a new arena would’ve been a great addition to the city, but he doesn’t believe it was realistic overall.

“When you look at it and looked at the numbers there’s no way I don’t see how this community would’ve paid for it. I mean that’s a lot of money for a town this size, said Jerry Garlington, who lives in Monroe.

The Mayor included a video rendering of what the revitalized Civic Center would look like on his Facebook page.

The Mayor’s plans include a hotel addition that would connect the event center with the Jack Howard Theater with a rooftop entertainment venue, modern lighting, and a courtyard.
