Ruston native, NFL Hall of Famer Fred Dean passes away at 68

RUSTON, La. (KNOE) - One of the greatest athletes to come out of Northeast Louisiana has died.

NFL pass rusher Fred Dean passed away on Wednesday night, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. An ex-teammate of his, Dwight Hicks, said Dean had been hospitalized with COVID-19 before his death. Hicks said Dean died of COVID-19 complications, according to CBS Sports.

Dean and Hicks both played for the San Fransisco 49ers. Dean was named an All-Pro twice and made the Pro Bowl four times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Dean attended Ruston High School and is in the Louisiana Tech Hall of Fame and in the College Football Hall of Fame.

He was 68 years old.
