ULM holds community supply drive for hurricane victims
Students organizing and collecting items for McNeese University in Lake Charles for hurricane recovery
MONROE, La. (KNOE) -The University of Louisiana Monroe is holding a Community Supply Drive to gather much-needed items for McNeese State University in Lake Charles, which was severely impacted by Hurricane Laura in August. However, since Delta made landfall on Friday, the proceeds from the drive will now go towards victims impacted by both storms.
The campus drive is Oct. 7-16. Donation bins are located on campus at the Student Union Building (SUB), ULM Library, and Schulze Dining Hall.
Donations from the community will be accepted from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Oct. 12-16 in the triangle parking lot located between Bayou Pointe Event Center across from the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Julia Letlow, the executive assistant to the president for external affairs and community engagement, says this drive is important because it partners with the community to give back to those most in need. Letlow says the idea for the drive came from the university’s president, Ron Berry.
“This was an idea brought forth by President Berry. Under his leadership, he came and asked what can we do as a university to encourage students and our community to come together and really rally for our sister institution in need,” Letlow shared.
“It’s important for us to hold drives just like this because we want to partner with the community and when there is a sister intuition in need or even another community in need such as Lake Charles we need to ban together and combine our resources so that we can reach out and lend a helping hand,” Julia Letlow added.
The supplies needed include toiletries, cleaning supplies, water, canned goods, non-perishable food items, baby food and formula, pet food, diapers, gloves, trash bags, batteries, shovels, insect repellent, rakes, and brooms.
The supplies will be brought to McNeese on Oct. 20. McNeese is a sister university to ULM as one of the nine universities in the UL System.
