MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A University of Louisiana Monroe fraternity is helping families still feeling the effects of Hurricane Laura. The Zeta Pi chapter of Delta Sigma Phi started a resource drive to provide them with needed items as southwest Louisiana families continue to recover.

“I talked to my family down south, and my grandmother’s house is completely gone. And my personal home down south is out of water and power for a few weeks,” Dagan Doyle said.

When Laura hit Lake Charles last month, it hit home for the ULM student. “I don’t think anybody can comprehend just how bad it is until you see it in person. It’s unimaginable,” he said.

“It’s just whole streets and businesses that you’re used to seeing growing up your whole life just completely gone. Like a bunch of memories that were there are erased. It’s really terrible. It’s saddening to see my home community down like that.”

Doyle reached out for help from his Delta Sigma Phi brothers to help southwest Louisiana families any way they could.

The chapter has raised more than $1000 they will use to buy needed items for families. “We’re also taking tangible items as well through this whole week,” said Nick Johnson, chapter special events and philanthropy chair.

“That could be toilet tissue, toothpaste, cases of water, canned goods. We’re taking all of that.”

Johnson said they’ve also received support from other ULM organizations and others. “We’ve had churches reach out to us. We’ve had the mayor, Friday Ellis. He’s been a big supporter. And the mayor of Oak Grove, Adam T. Holland. He’s been a great supporter of us as well.”

Doyle said even more donations would be appreciated.

“It’s really important to get the word out. This is bigger than Greek life. This is the time for everyone to come together really to push the help of the Louisiana community,” he said.

They plan on traveling to Lake Charles and delivering the donations in the next couple of weeks. The chapter has started a GoFundMe where you can donate. You can also drop off other donations to their house at 703 Warhawk Way near the ULM campus.
