ULM Warhawks fans taking regulations in stride for season opener
MONROE, La. (KNOE) -The big season opener for the ULM Warhawks is Saturday, September 19. But this football season will look unlike any other.
“This season is going to look and feel completely different than any other football season fans have ever experienced,” said ULM’s Executive Associate Athletic Director Todd Duley.
Malone stadium will only be filled to 25 percent capacity. No one is allowed in the parking lot until four hours before kick-off, and there will be no tailgating.
There will also be no cheerleaders on the field, and people will be expected to socially distance in their sections.
Fans seem to be taking these changes in stride.
“People understand that we’re going through a global pandemic and playing sports in a global pandemic is a unique situation so they’re rolling with the punches like we are,” said Duley.
Many fans are disappointed about not being able to tailgate. Others are more concerned about the players.
“I hope that they’re able to feed off of all the fans that come and support 'em. Especially in the student section,” said Tanner King.
Waterfront Grill in Monroe is usually a hotspot after games. The restaurant owner said he’s looking forward to business booming as usual.
“People come in to eat before the game because they’re not allowing cooking at the tailgate areas. So as bad as that is, I think that helps us,” said Sam Weems.
Regardless of the restrictions in place, fans said they’re looking forward to a great game.
