MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Bella the cat was the highlight of the Adopt A Pet segment on Friday, September 19, 2020.

Roxanne Smith with PAWS of Northeast Louisiana says Bella has an unusual story.

“She is a special needs cat at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter. She is the most loving, sweet thing,” says Roxanne Smith with PAWS of Northeast Louisiana. “Bella has an unusual story, she came into the Ouachita Parish Animal shelter with some of her children, and her kittens have been adopted.”

“They sent her off to get fixed, as they should so she never has to have any babies anymore, and there was just a little nick and it affected a nerve on her back leg, so her back legs don’t work exactly the way that they should,” explains Smith. “Now is this a problem for Bella? No, it’s not! She is about three weeks into this injury and it is permanent, but there’s no pain for Bella. And she’s getting used to getting around even though her back legs don’t do exactly what she wants them to do when she wants them to do it.”

Smith says there are a lot of cats and dogs at the shelter right now, so if you can’t adopt maybe fostering is an option for you.

“We are always looking for medical fosters. There are animals that are recuperating from injuries or taking medicines and the shelter environment is not the best place for them to be,” says Smith. “So we really would appreciate it if you could take an animal for a few weeks, and there’s no cost to you - this just gets them out of a shelter environment, which is a better environment to heal in and it gets them ready to be adopted.”

Before you head to the shelter, make sure you give them a call to set up an appointment. You can reach them at (318) 323 - 4032. You can check out the available pets at OPAS by looking at
