Winnfield runner competes in Boston Marathon virtually
WINNFIELD, La. (KNOE) -The 2020 Boston Marathon was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This did not stop Ashley Crawford, 24, from completing the marathon virtually in Winnfield.
Crawford qualified for the marathon in February 2019. She said she was disappointed to find out the annual marathon would not happen this year, but still wanted to participate. She completed the marathon on Saturday, September 12.
“I knew it was hard but I said you know what, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna set my goal and I’m gonna achieve it and I made it and I just can’t be more thankful,” said Crawford.
Crawford’s family said being able to compete virtually was a dream come true.
“The Boston Marathon has been on her bucket list for a long time and just never give up, you can do it,” said her aunt Crystal Stewart.
But Crawford said it was a long road to get there. She ran up to 13 miles daily to prepare for the 26.2-mile marathon. She said her best friend was by her side every step of the way.
“It was pretty intense we had a lot of days that were hard workouts and where we just about couldn’t stand after. But like I said everything we had to do, hard work, it was all worth it,” said Crawford’s friend Colby Raye.
To Crawford’s surprise, all of her loved ones were waiting for her at the finish line.
“I saw all these people and all these vehicles and I’m like...I’m about to finish this strong. And so that gave me the extra pump I needed to finish strong,” she said.
Even though the virtual race wasn’t what she expected, Crawford said she wouldn’t change a thing.
“Now that here with everybody, I don’t think it could’ve been any better so...it’s fine,” she said.
Crawford said she hopes to qualify for the 2021 Boston Marathon as well.
