OAK GROVE, La. (KNOE) - The town of Oak Grove and West Carroll Parish first responders held a remembrance ceremony Friday at Veterans Plaza.

Local officials and ministers spoke about the heroism shown by first responders and other civilians on Sept. 11.

Several encouraged everyone to take a moment to teach the youngest generation about what happened because they were not alive then.

They also shared a message of resiliency that began on Sept. 12, noting the fight Americans showed following the attacks.

They also shared the unity between all Americans. “No longer were we black or white, Democrat or Republican, Protestant or Catholic,” said Adam Holland, Oak Grove mayor. “We were Americans. We were one nation, one community with one future.”

The ceremony ended with TAPS and a special dispatch message at 8:59 a.m. That is the time the first tower of the World Trade Center was hit.
