MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Creative, innovative, and motivational are all words you could use to describe one elementary school teacher in Ouachita Parish.

Lashonda Jones is using music and rhythm to motivate her students and get them excited about this upcoming school year, regardless of how different it looks from previous years. Virtual learning is officially underway for grade school-age students in the parish, Jones wants her kids to know learning can still be fun, no matter where you are learning from.

“Regardless of where you are even though you are at home learning virtually, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure you have a fun learning experience in our classroom,” Jones said.

To prove her point she created a rap music video with inspiring lyrics that not only showcase her fun side but also give kids a look at what to expect this academic year. Mrs. Jones is a 5th-grade teacher at Robinson Elementary School. She’s been teaching for 12 years and like many teachers had to quickly adapt to the changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

“The first thing that I want them to grasp is to be able to learn how to operate their technology and the new programs we’ll be using because it’s all essential to their learning,” says Jones on what she wants to make sure her students understand.

Jones says she also wants to make sure she is communicating with parents and learning instructors just as much as she communicates with the kids, “well I was really worried about the communication aspect with parents because of course with virtual learning you have to communicate way more than you would if they were in the face to face classroom.”

She even went above and beyond to ensure that kids and parents know who she is as their teacher and as a person.

“So when my parents came for their virtual pick up a card was included and had this link to my video and some information on me so they would know who their teacher would be.”

So while this school year may look a little different this year, one thing stays the same. Teachers like Mrs. Jones are her ego her make this school year something to look forward to.
