Head-on crash claims 2 lives, injures 3 others in Concordia Parish
CONCORDIA PARISH, La. (KNOE) - Louisiana State Police say two people were killed in a crash in Concordia Parish.
According to police, the crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. on Aug. 13 on U.S. Highway 84, west of Jonesville.
They say a vehicle driven by Melvin Washington, 52, of Ferriday, was eastbound when it crossed the center line and hit another vehicle. This second vehicle was driven by Heather R. Rein, 29 of Vidalia. The crash resulted in the deaths of both drivers.
State Police also say two other adults were in Washington’s vehicle. They suffered serious to moderate injuries. A juvenile was riding in Rein’s vehicle and suffered moderate injuries. The juvenile was transported to a Baton Rouge hospital.
State Police say none of the adults were wearing their seatbelts. The juvenile was restrained, they said.
Toxicology samples were taken. The crash, including what caused Washington’s vehicle to cross the center line, is still under investigation.
Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most important decisions that a motorist can make. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may also reduce the extent of injury. Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
In 2020, Troop E Troopers have investigated 34 fatal crashes resulting in 41 fatalities.
