MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Parent orientation sessions for Ouachita Parish Schools’ Virtual Instructional Program ends Friday, Aug. 14. Orientation is required for virtual learning in the Ouachita Parish school district.

These sessions will give parents the opportunity to learn more about the curriculum, class schedules, and assessments. Parents will also find out how to get an electronic device to complete the program if they do not have one at home.

The program is being offered as an option for parents who don’t want their students to attend school physically. Students will receive instruction via Google Meet, Google Classroom, and other online platforms.

Director of Elementary Schools Curtis Pate asks all parents to remain patient during this process.

“I just hope they’ll come with patience. And that, not only patience for this week of the orientations but patience as we start school. Patience as we proceed through the school year. Because everything is looking much differently this year than it has in the past,” said Pate.

All parents will be asked to sign a contract during the session to commit to the program for the entire year. If they are unable to attend the session, they are asked to view a recorded presentation online.

All attendees will be required to wear masks when attending the sessions. Tables and chairs will be sanitized in between sessions.

Pate said this school year will look unlike any other.

“What will their day look like at the brick and mortar? What will their day look like at home? Logging on and hearing the instruction from their teacher? And you know they’ve got several electives and extracurricular activities that students are not able to participate in right now,” said Pate.

There will be four VIP orientation sessions held each day at all Ouachita Parish high schools starting at 9 a.m.

The deadline to register for the program is Friday. People have until Monday to opt-out if they change their mind about enrolling. The link to register is here.
