First Oak Grove liquor store in decades to open August 1
MONROE, La. (KNOE) -The first Oak Grove liquor store in decades is set to open on Saturday, August 1.
“Smokes kinda clearing a little bit today, and tomorrow’s the grand opening, so here we are,” said owner Mike Jones.
Jones wanted Oak Grove Package Liquor to feel friendlier than your average liquor store.
“I set out to make it a little bit better than that. You know, a little bit more upscale than just a regular liquor store with stuff piled everywhere. We’ve kinda done it neatly and ordered.”
Oak Grove was dry until last October.
“I’m 39 years old, and I can never remember the day where we actually allowed the sale of adult beverages,” said Mayor Adam Holland.
Holland said he’s been told the last time they sold adult beverages may have been the late ’70s. As they did more research, he’s also been told it may not have happened inside city limits since the prohibition.
That’s not lost on Jones.
“I guess that the reality of that kinda hit me last week until I kinda really thought about it,” he said. “But, prior to that, I just kinda was going with the flow. Get it ready, you know? Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go. And I kinda stopped and looked back and everybody says that’s a really cool thing you’re doing. And it is. It’s history, kind of, you know?”
Holland said the store will bring the town more sales tax revenue.
“It’s creating new jobs. It’s putting new dollars into the economy, so it’s going to be a positive,” said the mayor.
Jones said they have eight to ten employees. They’re excited to open.
“We’re going to do really good. I think the public is really waiting for it to happen and excited,” Jones said.
He even received a toast from the mayor.
“In the words of the great Harry Caray, to my good friend Mike Jones, all the Warhawk, Tiger and Bulldog fans out there, this Bud’s for you,” said Holland.
Jones said the store will open on August 1 at noon.
