MONROE, La. (KNOE) -A Louisiana state senator is calling for the cancellation of athletics at K through 12 schools statewide due to COVID-19. This cancellation would last through December.

Senator Cleo Fields is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Education. He made a request in a letter to the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on Monday.

This comes after the Senate Committee on Education discussed plans last week about how to safely reopen schools. They discussed other social distancing options like having extra school buses for students and virtual learning.

Fields is requesting the suspension includes any activities where students would need to meet in group settings. This includes practices and team meetings.

“Adults need to press the pause button and we need to do truly what is in the best interest of our children, and I just don’t feel we’re taking enough time to look at that,” said Fields.

BESE will meet July 14 to discuss emergency rules for the coming school year and address the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
