Monroe PD: Man killed in accident involving fireworks

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Police say a man is dead following what is believed to be an accident involving fireworks.

According to Monroe PD, it happened on July 2, 2020, in the 4200 block of Elm Street.

Police say Damorrious Hollins was in the parking lot of Roy Neal Shelling School when he set off a mortar round while holding the tube near his left leg. A witness told MPD the mortar exploded on his leg. Police say Hollins suffered an injury to his left hip area. The victim was transported to St. Francis Medical Center, where he died.

Police say it became evident through the victim’s injury, evidence at the scene, and a witness statement that the victim died as a result of a fireworks accident.

Police say the incident happened near security cameras and they hope to get additional evidence from the video.

No one else was injured in the incident.
