Arrests made after gunfire exchanged in Monroe

MONROE, La. (KNOE) -The Monroe Police Department has arrested two men accused of attempted second-degree murder.

According to the MPD, it happened on June 22, 2020, in the 900 block of Luther Dr.

Police say multiple victims reported that they were in the area when 20-year-old Derrick Brown threw a brick at their vehicle. They say when the victims attempted to confront Brown he told his brother to shoot them.

According to arrest records, that’s when Brown, 21-year-old Malech J. Rucks, and two other people produced guns and numerous shots were fired at the victims. Records state that’s when the victims retreated to their vehicle and returned fire. No one was hit by the gunshots but there was damage to the victim’s vehicle.

Police say Brown and people with him told them they were at the scene of the shooting when it occurred but said they ran when shots were fired. They say Rucks told them that he was never at the scene of the shooting and he did not know anything about it.

The arrest records say there were two victims in this investigation that returned fired at the suspects in self-defense and that there were other people in the cars when they were being fired at.

Rucks and Brown were arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
