Winterizing Your Roof Starts in the Summer: Tips and Hints

Posted: Updated:
“For most of us our homes are the most important investment we’ll ever make. I’m sure you’ll agree that the roof over your head is the most basic- yet most important part of your home! Just one small leak can cause thousands of dollars of damage and ruin the beautiful interior decorating that you worked so hard on.”
The best time to winterize your roof is before the temperatures begin to drop. Here are steps to take to prepare for the Detroit winter ahead.

Detroit (September 3rd, 2014) – With the Detroit metro area still reeling from the previous record-breaking winter, many are looking to the months ahead and wondering what is in store. Shoveling out from under the blankets of snow affected our wallets in terms of home repairs needed because of the weather. This winter may seem far from our worries right now, but the preparations for the cold months need to begin now, before the temperatures begin to drop.

Heavy snow and freezing temperatures take a toll on your roof. Even a mild winter, with the increase in precipitation, can shorten the lifespan of a house’s most important protective layer. Luckily, there are steps that can be taken to prepare your roof for the winter ahead – and these need to be addressed now, before the leaves turn and the cold sets in.

Here are a few tips for getting your roof ready, courtesy of the Detroit roofing company R.A.M. Residential:

Clean the gutters. Cluttered gutters cause water buildup around the house trim and roof edging, which leads to deterioration and warping over time. Any damaged gutters should be replaced.

Check the caulking. Look at the caulking in the roof seams. If you see any crinkling, it’s an invitation for a leak and needs to be reapplied.

Repair damaged shingles. If you notice any shingles that are damaged or missing, they should be repaired or replaced. The shingles play a major role in keeping your roof leak and damage free. You can use roofing cement to fix loose shingles that are still in good shape.

Remove overhanging limbs. Tree limbs that hang over your roof constantly scratch and pull at the shingles when the wind blows or rain falls. Remove the limbs that touch or hang directly over your roof.

Insulate your attic. Preventing icing on the roof by insulating the attic beneath it is one of the best ways to avoid damage and leaks.

If walking around on the roof doesn’t sound appealing, have a certified roofing contractor come to inspect it. They can not only take care of issues with your roof’s current condition, but also pinpoint any potential problems that can be exacerbated by the winter months ahead.

R.A.M. residential offers free roof inspections for Detroit area homes for both the exterior and interior of the home. To schedule a free inspection, visit www.ramresidential.com.

Making sure your roof is winter-ready is important in the Detroit area. Addressing any issues now, before they become problems this winter, can save a lot of money and stress.
