Puppies need good home after being abandoned

Posted: Updated:
FARMERVILLE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Abandoned and left in the heat for hours, five puppies are lucky to have survived. On Wednesday, Crimestoppers of Union Parish was offering a $1,000 for two women caught on surveillance video leaving seven puppies at Odom Veterinary Hospital in Farmerville. The women have been identified but the five surviving pups still need a good home.

When the puppies were found, 18 hours after they had been abandoned, the seven had become six.

"Wormy, dehydrated, we lost one the next night, from dehydration and the parasites. But the rest are doing good," Dr. Damon Odom said.

Odom says people leave animals on his doorstep fairly often.

"We've had them dropped in garbage bags. We've had them set on the front porch, in the middle of the drive way, we've had them in the pens in the back. It happens fairly regular," Odom said.

Union Parish Crimestoppers have identified the women, but at last check, have not released their identities. It's unclear if they will be charged with a crime, but Odom's kennel manager says their irresponsibility is heart breaking.

"It's hot. They don't have any water. They don't have any room and puppies can gather on top of each other and try to escape out the cage, definitely when they are distressed and stuff like that. And it can smother the smaller one or whoever gets stuck at the bottom," Autumn Hammond said.

The vet is now looking to place the pups in permanent homes. The staff says they haven't named them because if they get too attached, they will stay.

And Odom says this is a good example on why spay and neutering animals is so important.

If you are interested in adopting one of these puppies, call Odom veterinary Hospital at 368-6060.
