Mayo sides with Holmes, calls out councilman and union leaders

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo is taking sides and it's with Monroe Police Chief Quentin Holmes.

A day after the Monroe Police Union's vote of "no confidence" in Chief Holmes, Mayo says he'll launch his own investigation. He's blaming the problems on some people within the force and the city council.

The union has spoken, but Mayo wants the last word.

"I didn't ask the union who they want to be chief, and I am not asking anybody else who to fire," Mayo said.

On Monday, 81-percent of the Monroe Police Union voted "no confidence" in Chief Holmes. But Mayo says some members of the police force have their own agendas.

"Some people that he has moved, some people that have had to go back to the streets. They are really mad and quite frankly, they are (beep) and part of this movement to do this. I have a problem with that. So if you think politics and no politics is going to stand in the way to let this man get railroad you got another thing coming,” Mayo said.

Mayo also says the union had a hand in developing the department's new action plan. And it's insulting that they call it fluff.

"Then two days before the action plan then the union undermines the action plan by calling for a vote of no confidence,” Mayo said.

Mayo called out Councilman Ray Armstrong and referenced an interview that he did with KNOE on Sunday, comparing crime rates across Ouachita Parish.

"All of that has figured into the sabotaging my administration and the police department," Mayo said.

As for Holmes, he says several people are jealous of his quick rise to the top position. And he says the union wants control the department.

"We have members with in the department, specifically being headed and spear-headed by the union leadership, in giving misinformation to misinform officers. Do things like this to my new officers and get them all riled up because they can't get what they want and run the department," Holmes said.

Mayo and Holmes made it very clear; they consider leaders of the Monroe Police Union, public enemy number one.

And we also spoke with union leader Michael Calloway. He says Mayor Mayo and Chief Holmes were well aware of the union's concerns for some time.

"There were 96- members of the union that voted no confidence in our chief. I doubt that that many people could be bullied into or talked in to if they didn't feel like that. That is not something we put forward. In fact, the union leadership had held this off for a while," Calloway said.

Calloway says the union members can't strike, and they wouldn't do that anyway. He says the next move is to meet with the mayor and go from there.

And after listening to the news conference, Councilman Armstrong was eager to respond. Armstrong tells us that it's never been his intent to sabotage the administration and certainly not the police force.
