Ouachita Parish crime study "kickoff"

Posted: Updated:
MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News)- Investigating crimes is the job of the police, but crime prevention is something the community can take an active role in.
This morning business leaders, law enforcement officers, and concerned citizens from all over Ouachita parish met to voice their concerns about crime.

The meeting was arranged by Monroe City Councilman, Ray Armstrong. This was his way of kicking off a crime prevention study to make the parish a safer and attractive place to live.
Armstrong believes the study is needed to ease the minds of citizens and erase the negative image outsiders have of the area.

Everyone who spoke, mentioned the negative perception of the Parish and the cleaning up of crime.

Business leaders mentioned how the negative image detours new businesses coming to the area.

Sheriff Jay Russell spoke on the multi jurisdictional task force that will tour high crime areas of the parish and it's municipalities. The Sheriff's Office, Louisiana State Police, West Monroe Police, and Monroe Police will make up the task force.

The study will require funding. Armstrong says grants are being sought at to handle the cost.

Councilman Armstrong is looking to obtain two grants that will allow a person to oversee the study on a daily basis.
