Monroe Police Union to hold confidence vote on chief

Posted: Updated:

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The Monroe Police Union will soon be voting on the confidence they have in Chief Quentin Holmes.

"We will have a ballot vote about the confidence in the Chief to run the department," says Monroe Police Union President Michael Calloway.

He says officers have concerns about leadership, and that these are not new feelings, but those that have been expressed for several years.

"This isn't something that just came up as a result of the survey, there were things leading up to, and basically the survey confirmed how the people felt," says Calloway.

He says the call for a confidence vote of Chief Quentin Holmes is not solely based on the survey done in mid-may.

The anonymous police survey has led the chief and Mayor Jamie Mayo to create an action plan. Calloway says he's in full support of the plan, but that it's just a look at "what" needs to change. He says it's the "how" part that's leading to the union's vote later this month.

The mayor says he finds it hard to understand how the "what" and "how" are different.

"There are issues that the chief has to take ownership of, but I don't believe all of these issues are the chief's fault," says Mayo, "That was the point of the assessment and the action plan."

"The call for the vote undermines the announcement of the action plan," says Mayo, "This plan needs time to come into fruition."

Calloway says that plan is taking too long.

"We needed to get out in front of this and address the concerns the public had, and that's why we feel it has taken longer than it should have," says Calloway.

Police Chief Quentin Holmes has responded to the announce of the vote with the following:  "You always have to respect the rights of labor organizations but over the past couple of months we've made significant strides with some of the challenges. My ultimate goal is to continue to work hard and there's a great opportunity to get better and as you know with opportunity comes opposition."

The ballot vote is scheduled for July 21 through August 4.

The action plan will be announced Wednesday, July 16, at 9 a.m.
