Monroe hopes to offer direct flights to Denver this fall

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Monroe Regional Airport is hoping to offer a new direct flight to Denver this fall.

Fridays are typically one of the busiest days for travel, especially during the summer months as everyone is heading out-of-town for the weekend, but at the Monroe Regional Airport, this Friday was a little slow.

Airport and city officials are hoping to score a deal that could change that.

"We have a meeting set up with United Airlines executives. We, in partnership with the Denver airport, CenturyLink and Monroe Regional Airport are hoping to establish a direct flight to Denver, and so we feel that we have a real good chance of that happening," says Airport Director Ron Phillips.

Phillips says Denver is one of the top six destinations from Monroe. Right now, the regional airport only offers direct flights to three of those locations: Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta.

CenturyLink plays a major role in this deal. They employee over 5,000 people at their regional office in Denver and have employees that travel between locations regularly.

"They have a lot of people that are going back and forth to Denver, and we felt like that would be a good match so we can help establish that service for them as well," says Phillips.

Of course, this wouldn't just be helping out those on business trips. What about those with family in Denver?  Or those annual trips to hit the slopes?  Regardless of why your life may take you to Colorado. The regional airport is hoping to make direct flights available this fall, but it all rests on Monday's meeting.

Monroe officials are crossing their fingers, hoping a new flight will help get more people to "Fly Monroe."
