Fire department and Goodwill team up for clothing drive

OUACHITA PARISH, la. (KNOE 8 News & Goodwill Industries) -  The firemen and women of the Ouachita Parish Fire Department and Goodwill Industries of North Louisiana teamed up to launch a friendly donation competition between fire stations during the month of June.

Goodwill would like to extend appreciation to the firemen and women that serve Ouachita Parish by formally recognizing them in a ceremony that will take place on July 17, 2014 at 12 noon, at Fire Station 12, 3947 Caples Road in West Monroe, LA.

The Ouachita Parish Fire Department and Goodwill's goal was to emphasize the positive impact that donating clothing and other household goods can have on communities and the planet. Throughout this donation competition, the Fire Department challenged their team members to clean out their closets and homes of unwanted clothes and put them to good use by donating them to Goodwill. "When people donate items that are no longer needed to Goodwill, they are helping someone find a job, strengthening their community and preserving the planet," stated D. J. Roman, Goodwill's Marketing and Communications Manager. "Donations also help the environment by allowing others to repurpose the items so they can be diverted from landfills."

Through the partnership with the Ouachita Parish Fire Department, all donations to Goodwill assist in providing job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based services. These programs provide assistance to people with disabilities, people who lack education or job experience and others who are facing challenges to finding employment. Goodwill's mission is fulfilled through the collection and sale of donated goods, which fund these critical programs.
