The Baskin Vol. Fire Department gets help

Posted: Updated:
BASKIN, La. (KNOE 8 News)- When we call on the fire department we expect to see well equipped fire fighters show up to put the fire out.

However, many of our volunteer fire departments are only fanning the flames because of a lack of equipment.

The Baskin Volunteer Department is going through the same problems many others are experiencing across the nation, a lack of funding.

"This equipment is just out of our reach as far as affordability we can't touch it our budgets just aren't capable," Assistant Chief Wes Anders said.

Wes saw the need for better equipment, that's when he hired a grant writer. Through those grants more than $400 thousand dollars was secured to update equipment.

Another big problem Wes says volunteer fire departments are having all around is recruiting people to join the volunteer fire department.

"Now a days people don't have the time we work so much and communities and employers don't give the people the time like they use to," Wes said.

Other volunteer fire departments in the area have reaped the benefits of federal funding as well. Rocky Branch purchased a brand new fire engine in May.
The fire department in Collinston recently received $79 thousand dollars for new equipment and emergency vehicles.
