Food Bank reports 2013 results, addresses SNAP misconceptions

MONROE, La. (Food Bank & KNOE 8 News) – The Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana is sharing key results from 2013.

Distributed 4,565,395 pounds of food throughout its 12-parish service area.

o Distributed the equivalent of 3,539,065 meals.

o Value of food distributed: $7,715, 518

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) applications completed in 2013: 902

o Equivalent pounds of food from SNAP: 1,323,910

o Equivalent meals form SNAP: 1,026,287

o Average SNAP benefit per application in LA is $278/month

o Average certification period for a SNAP recipient is 15.3 months

“There are unfortunate misperceptions about the SNAP program that we hope to shed some light on by providing facts and statistics,” said Annmarie Sartor, Food Bank of NELA board president. “While SNAP is a good start at feeding people and significantly extends our reach, the program does not meet all hunger needs. Nationally, only about 60 percent of those who are eligible for SNAP actually receive it. In addition, comprehensive studies by Feeding America show that the monthly amount of food stamps supplied will only provide enough food for two and a half weeks.”
