Mayo makes it "Official"

MONROE, La. (KNOE 8 News) - Another name has officially been thrown in the hat for the 5th District U.S. Congressional District race.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo officially announced his candidacy to supporters Wednesday morning in Monroe.

This will be the mayor's second go round running for the seat. Mayo believes this time around he will be victorious in November.

"I have had an overwhelming calls from the district indicating that they wanted me to run and so I prayed over it and thought about it. I talked about it with my family and we look forward to running," Mayo said.

Political analyst Joshua Stockley believes, Mayo's announcement makes the playing field a little tougher for the five republicans that have already announced they were running.

"It insures that all of the democratic votes are going to go to him. It's entirely possible that Mayor Mayo may finish first in the primary, if he doesn't win out right," Stockley said.

In last November's election Mayo fell comfortably in third place right behind Rep. Vance McAllister.

After Mayo announced his candidacy in Monroe, he headed south to meet with a group of supporters in Alexandria.
