GOP field crowded for Louisiana's 6th Congressional District

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The eight Republicans vying for the open 6th District congressional seat are trying to highlight differences among their personal resumes, as they strike largely similar policy positions.

In a debate Tuesday, held by the Republican Party of East Baton Rouge Parish, the contenders described themselves as conservatives who oppose the federal health care law and think President Barack Obama has overreached his authority.

GOP candidates include retired Navy captain Bob Bell, state Sen. Dan Claitor, software company owner Paul Dietzel, tax attorney Cassie Felder, former state coastal chief Garret Graves, physical therapist Craig McCulloch, former LSU football player and teacher Trey Thomas, and state Rep. Lenar Whitney.

The contenders seemed to agree they were competing in November's election for a December runoff spot against Democrat former Gov. Edwin Edwards.
