Mississippi breaks ground on another casino project

Posted: Updated:

D'IBERVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Officials will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for D'Iberville's first casino on July 15.

Construction will start on the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort after owners persuaded banks to loan the more than $250 million needed to build the 60,000-square foot casino and adjoining 300-room hotel.

The Mississippi Gaming Commission voted June 26 to approve the start of construction, after the casino missed an earlier financing deadline.

Scarlet Pearl CEO George Toth has said he aims to open the casino and hotel tower before the beginning of 2016.

D'Iberville Mayor Rusty Quave has said the city is looking forward to tax revenue and 1,500 permanent jobs.

Scarlet Pearl would be the 13th casino on the Mississippi coast and the first to open since Biloxi's $62 million Margaritaville Casino & Restaurant in 2012.
